Workshop: "Advanced Perspectives on Strategy & Organization Design", delivered to Consultants at a Advisory Firm, June 2017.

Strategy traces its origins to the Greek word “stratagos”, which means the art of general-ship. It is a relatively young discipline in management, and was formalized in the 1950s. Over the years, it has evolved & become a multidisciplinary field, with inputs from macro & micro economics, finance, marketing, cognitive processes & human relations. Like other disciplines in a fast moving 21st century, this field is also evolving rapidly.  In the past Strategy has not been a strength of businesses in India.  In an increasingly volatile & uncertain world, young entrepreneurial firms as well as established businesses will need to enhance their capabilities in formulation and execution of Strategy.  “Advanced Perspectives in Strategy & Organization Design” is designed for managers with preferably 10 years of experience and some exposure to concepts in Strategic Management, and MBA students with several years of experience like in an Executive MBA program. It seeks to deepen the participants’ appreciation of forthcoming changes in the Environment from a managerial perspective. It provides a holistic perspective on the principles, drivers & evolution of the tools typically used for analyzing the Industry, & for Strategy Formulation at the firm-level. Some of the traditional frameworks for understanding Industry & Firm level responses will be revisited, and the principles & practices of how a Firm can respond in a “VUCA” world will be discussed.  The analysis will drill down to examining closely the principles & future evolution of Organization Design as a response of the firm.  Several business-related examples will be discussed. The content will address both theory & practise, with bias towards appreciating the nuances of business application of various concepts in Strategy.  A fuller version of “Advanced Perspectives in Strategy” is conducted over four two sessions of 1.5 hours each.

Flow of the DiscussionsOverview of the field of Strategy & drivers of its evolution, Leading schools of thought, Introduction to a Case, Strategic Thinking & Good habits of Strategists.  Introduction to 3 practical frameworks, Understanding the drivers & direction of a VUCA Environment, Closer examination of current popular frameworks for Industry & Strategy analysis in light of the VUCA Environment, Industry & Firm-level responses, examples drawn from industry.  Understanding of Organization Design as an enabler of Firm-level response
